Strengthening the site with a competent partner

Zeppelin Power Systems and German Dry Docks form MWB Marine Services GmbH

The engine division of Bremerhaven's German Dry Docks AG (GDD) wants to significantly expand its business activities in the area of repair and maintenance of marine engines. In order to, focus on the engine business, GDD is founding a new company, in which  their engine business will be integrated. The new company MWB Marine Services GmbH will be based in Bremerhaven at the existing premises. Zeppelin Power Systems GmbH & Co. KG (ZPS) from Hamburg will become a partner in in this company, subject to the approval of the antitrust authorities, and will contribute their engine service competence as an industrial  partner. Today, GDD informed the employees and Zeppelin Power Systems presented itself and the future business orientation. All jobs and the location remain under the existing management.

For GDD, the reorientation of the engine sector is the strategic response to the current maritime market situation. "We are increasingly operating in an international environment and in an international competition, where we will be on a solid footing with a broad product and service portfolio," explains GDD CEO Guido Försterling. "Similar to our shipyard alliance, we want to strengthen Bremerhaven as the maritime service location with this step."

MWB Marine Services is thus the successor to the traditional MWB Motorenwerke Bremerhaven AG, the long-standing repair and conversion specialist in the Kaiserhafen. The previous GDD division specializes in manufacturer-independent maintenance and repair services for engines and gensets and the sale of spare parts of certain engine and component manufacturers. In addition, MWB Marine Services can refer to a whole series of major repairs such as the replacement or modification of engines.

The new company MWB Marine Services GmbH will continue to maintain and expand these business segments. Step by step, work and services for other engine manufacturers will be added and offered on the international market. Furthermore, an expansion of the spare parts trade is planned. This is to be accompanied by a continuous expansion of the business. GDD’s traditional business segment cogeneration units remains on the market under the brand name MWB Power.

ZPS and GDD have long been working closely together in the service for engines and drive systems from the ZPS portfolio, for example, during maintenance work on river cruise ships. Due to the growing demand in the shipping sector, among other things for exhaust gas cleaning systems and the conversion of marine engines for dual fuel operation, the commonalities between the two companies have expanded in the recent past.

For ZPS, the partnership with GDD in the new company is interesting for strategic reasons. "The partnership with MWB Marine Services allows Zeppelin to carry out complex solutions for the repair and maintenance of engines and propulsion systems as well as repowering projects directly in GDD's docks in the future," emphasises Volker Poßögel, CEO of Zeppelin Power Systems. Dr. Harald Wilms, Head of the Business Development, points to the opportunities for internationalization within the Zeppelin network.
